About the Kalimotxo

The Kalimotxo, red wine and cola, comes from the Basque Country in Spain. The common story says it was invented at a festival in Algorta in 1972, when the wine had gone bad and the organisers mixed it with cola to save it.

The wine family. Mixing wine with fruit, sugar and water is far older than the cocktail. Spanish sangria, the French Kir and the wine cups of Victorian England were all made to lighten wine and share it. These drinks are lower in alcohol and made for long afternoons.
